Now the question is, what is buckwheat?
A lot of people think buckwheat is a grain. This is a very common mistake as it is not, because it is actually a Super-Seed and comes from the family of rhubarb and sorrel. Buckwheat is an excellent alternative to foods such as rice and wheat flour as well as oats.
Before I share my personal verdict with you 🙂 I would like to make a disclaimer that these meal ideas and recipes below are my own creation and I have tried and tested them for months and they have changed my life for the better.
Gluten-free and myself
I prefer being gluten free and I feel it suits my stomach better than the wheat. It instantly gives me energy and makes me feel lighter, unlike the wheat products, where I used to feel heavy and sleepy. So, I did some research for alternative options and came across this brilliant super-seed.
Being a research freak as usual 😉 I started searching for its benefits and came across many of them, but personally I’ve benefited the following:
- Research claims that it improves heart health by lowering cholesterol and blood pressure levels BUT PERSONALLY I feel relaxed and focused as it also contains high level of magnesium.
- Research claims that it contains disease fighting antioxidants BUT PERSONALLY it helped clear my skin tremendously and gave me a glow on my face.
- Research claims that it helps you lose weight BUT PERSONALLY I feel I have lost weight especially around my stomach area, as buckwheat is an easy to digest seed, with its higher fiber content, which helps improve digestion.
- Research claims that it helps prevent diabetes BUT PERSONALLY buckwheat helped me overcome my sugar level fluctuation, which used to result in extremely bad headaches, vomiting and dizziness especially if I was for even 5 minutes away from my meal.
- Research claims that buckwheat has so much more vitamins and minerals than the wheat BUT PERSONALLY since I have been having buckwheat in my diet I feel more upbeat and don’t get tired. A very obvious example is that before buckwheat I used to get so tired and despite being active I could not walk up the stairs even up to 2 floors. But now I can walk up to 6 floors without stopping at every few steps and catching my breath!
How I enjoy buckwheat?
I tend to have buckwheat for my breakfast and my main meal. Below I have given you a simple and quick guide of what they are and how to make it.
I have buckwheat flakes for my breakfast. I simply add couple of handful of buckwheat flakes in a cereal bowl, add hot water and leave it for 10 minutes, then add a flavored yogurt, raisins, almonds, and a couple of chopped dates.
a spoon (mixing with hands can be very messy!) I make sure the dough is hard otherwise its tricky to roll out, despite dusting with the dry flour it still sticks on the work top. I just make it as a normal chapatti. I tend to use some Khanum Ghee to make it extra tasty!
I enjoy the chapatis with various curries, including meat, chicken, lentils and vegetables. You can have them with whatever you fancy.
